Pilates, founded by German born Joseph
Pilates, has been around for a century but has only gained attention over the
past 10 years or so as celebrities likely Melanie Griffiths, Madonna
and Sophie Dahl began to share their experience with this holistic form
of exercise.
Pilates has something to offer everyone, of
any age or fitness level. Although
you will gain strength in the whole body, one of the main benefits of Pilates is
core strength.
Core strength refers to the abdominal and back muscles
at your center which support your whole body whether you are moving or at
rest. As these muscles are
strengthened, you will notice improved posture,
and you will find it easier to complete your daily tasks.
You will also see a change in the way your clothes feel and your body
looks.
A distinguishing feature of Pilates is
that to practice it you must be totally focused and concentrated,
creating the mind-body connection. If
you sometimes feel overwhelmed by everyday stresses, giving all your attention
to the movements of a Pilates sequence can help to still the insistent clamor of
your daily life, acting like meditation to calm and clear your mind. This total
focus on your breath, movement and
alignment is what makes Pilates so satisfying.
