What is Meditation?
Sitting
quietly doing nothing spring comes and the grass grows
by itself.
~Ancient Buddhist Expression
Unless you are
an accomplished yogi, your mind is likely all over the place most of the time.
Just notice what happens to your mind as you perform a simple task like
washing dishes. Your mind is
probably planning your next task, worrying about whether you are going to be on
time for your meeting and deciding what you are are going to wear to the office
tomorrow.
The practice of meditation can
help you to stop this incessant thinking.
Meditation
is a process of sitting in stillness with relaxed breathing and a quiet mind. There
are many methods or traditions of meditation. Bellas
offers a comprehensive program of relaxation
training, Pranayama (breathwork), mindfulness and mantra meditation.
Relaxation
training involves Systematic Relaxation as well as other techniques including
Point to Point Breathing, 61 Points and
tensing and releasing muscle groups.
Pranayama encompasses
breath awareness and breathing
techniques to enable you to develop
deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Pranayama
techniques also allow you to regulate the motion of the lungs to control or
expand prana, the vital energy. These
breathing exercises regulate the depth, speed and pause to the flow of the
breath.
Through
the practice of breath awareness and control you learn to tap into the inner
stillness of the body and mind, leading you naturally to the practice of
meditation. We offer instruction in
mindfulness as well as meditation on the breath and mantra meditation.
Mindfulness,
very simply, is the opposite of automatic pilot.
It entails being aware of and sensitive to your present moment to the
very fullest, with your complete attention.
It can be described as a detached concentration.
Mantra
meditation involves the repetition of a word or phrase whose meaning may
remind us of a spiritual concept.
A mantra may also be used because the vibration its sound evokes has an
inherent meaning to the human spirit.
Mantras soothe.
Small group classes are
offered periodically or can be arranged for groups of 4 or more. Individual
sessions can be scheduled at any time.
